The ‘Old Rag Mountain Mermaid’ with her Sweet Serenades

Kiaya Abernathy is a dreamy, Virginia grown, ethereal folk singer-songwriter with a soulful, broken, & mystical feel. A mix of Stevie Nicks, Tori Amos and Brandi Carlile. Kiaya has been writing since age 11, calling on a wide variety of influences. Offering listeners uniquely spellbinding music. Her enchanting performances are wistfully nostalgic, with sultry vocals and acoustic melodies. Her songwriting is soft and introspective yet illuminating and powerful.

Born in a cabin in the mountains of Rappahannock to an herbalist & a horse whisperer. Kiaya is a 3rd generation musician. Her father a musical carpenter and his father before him, a pedal steel player and disc jokey on Big K radio. Raised in a gypsy nature, she spent her early childhood on the road traveling the four corners in an airstream. She enjoyed adolescence in the garden and in the wood, riding her horse bareback upon full moon nights, and swimming in the crystal springs of the blue ridge. Kiaya earned her performance sea legs as a teen by singing at local gigs with her father and his band the OKs. She did not attend school until she was fifteen, and would go on to graduate with distinction from the University of Virginia with a degree in Anthropology and Linguistics.

For the past 6 years Kiaya has made it her mission to help lift up her fellow creative creatures by showcasing stories & songs on her show Rappahannock Radio. Her slogan is “Artists Support Artists”. The show features musicians, discussions in fine art and herbalism in addition to pretty much any topic under the moon!
